Did you know that puppies need a series of 3-4 parvo combo vaccines before being considered protected? this is why breeders and vets will tell you to steer clear of public settings until your puppy is fully vaccinated.
Puppies get their first vaccine around 7-8 weeks of age, their second at 10-12weeks of age, their third at 14-16 weeks (and if you do one at 14 weeks your puppy should get a fourth at 18 weeks for added protection). this is because you never really know when moms antibodies are out of the puppies system (though you can do a blood draw called a titer test). So it’s basically a guessing game on when the vaccine will be effective though most puppies lose moms antibodies by 12 weeks of age. It’s also very very important to note that for Dalmatians you should Not Get lepto vaccines until 6 months of age as they frequently have reactions to them. Vaccines should also be staggered and never given at the same time To avoid life threatening reactions that overload the system As this is also common in Dalmatians.
Nearly all puppies are born with worms, this is why good breeders start deworming at 2 weeks and bi-weekly after that. Your breeder may also send you home with continued or extra doses of dewormer. Personally here at the ranch, we deworm every other week with pyrantel (our vet usually gives their final pyrantel at the same time as their vaccine) and then give safeguard for three days before pups go home. We usually also send dewormer home with our puppies. Even though our vet does our deworming, and fecal exams before they go home. We always suggest following up with your vet as a precaution as some parasites can remains dormant or go undetected until the puppy is stressed. Either way, anytime your puppy has soft or runny stool it’s suggested to get a fecal sample into your vet right away.
*NOTE: most of these meds need to be prescribed by your vet, however over the counter meds can be effective we personally use Advantage multi on our dogs *
-Anytime you try a new topical med please make sure to try a small section first
- If you see adult fleas or ticks on your dog, please try a capstar first and bath in original dawn dish soap then allow the pet to dry before applying any topical. Dawn kills fleas on contact
